Guppy Grass (Najas guadalupensis)
Guppy grass is a fast-growing, highly adaptable aquatic plant known for its thin, branching stems and fine leaves. Popular in breeding and low-tech tanks, it provides excellent cover and helps maintain water quality.
Appearance:
Guppy grass has long, slender, and flexible stems lined with narrow, pointed green leaves. Its growth is bushy and somewhat unruly, often forming tangled mats or floating masses. It has a light, feathery texture that adds movement and volume to the aquarium.
Aquarium Use:
This plant can be used floating or planted, depending on the aquascape style. It provides great hiding spots for fry, shrimp, and small fish, especially livebearers like guppies. It also helps absorb excess nutrients, making it valuable in breeding and natural filtration setups.
Care Requirements:
Guppy grass thrives in low to high light conditions and does not require COâÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ. It grows quickly in a wide temperature range of 18 to 28°C (64 to 82°F), and tolerates pH between 6.0 and 8.0. Growth is fast and can become invasive if not regularly trimmed.
Additional Notes:
Due to its rapid growth, guppy grass is excellent for nitrate reduction and algae control. It may become tangled or block light in smaller tanks, so routine pruning is essential. Its soft, flexible structure makes it a favorite in fry tanks and low-tech community aquariums.
